Since my new (to me) beemer was somewhat of an impulse buy i know next to nothing about it. Can anyone educate me on common issues or interesting quirks on the car? For those who didnt catch my previous post its an e36 compact 316.

Not really. I’ve owned a pair of straight six E30 Tourings, but haven’t really worked on those cars.

I do like your “Not sure what im doing with it yet, i just wanted it” sentiment though. A small warning, this can get out of hand. Until last week I owned 6 cars as a result, ranging from 16-29 years of age. And I drive a company car. I somewhat donated one of those six to my parents last week because Mitsubishi Galant > Suzuki Alto.

If you look for opponaut “Will race for food” he races an e36 compact and is probably the best resource. Nice guy to talk to, good driver too.

The cooling system is shit and will fail, though most are so old now they’ve been upgraded to something half decent.

The clockspring inside the steering wheel for the airbag will probably rattle over bumps. It’s no big deal but it if really annoys you (which with all the other rattles these cars have, it shouldn’t) it isn’t too hard to replace.

Buy shock mount reinforcement plates! The mounts aren’t the strongest thing in the world and will tear if abused enough.

The glovebox door is a shit design and will probably eventually stop actually closing. Hold it up in place and use the key to lock it and it will stay.

I don’t know if it’s just mine or what, but it takes absolutely forever for a code reader to communicate with the OBDII port.

Good luck upgrading speakers cheaply if you ever want to. BMW didn’t use standard sizes so you have to go through specialist companies.

That’s all I've got. They're fun cars but can be insanely finicky.

Don’t underestimate your inventiveness. Disclaimer: despite my 6 cars + 1 company car I live in a apartment.

I have mine spread out across two houses. With my family’s cars we have 6 among 4 people who drive.

I notice it warms up fast but doesnt overheat (ragged it on a b road and it stayed cool) so the cooling system seems like its been looked after. The stereo in it isnt bad so ill probably leave it as is. I love the 90s period tape deck. Thanks for the tips, ill look into the reinforcing plates.

Inexplicably you’ll find yourself parking like a complete asshat, the car (all on it’s own) will tailgate and swerve in & out of traffic, and you’ll zone out completely and forget you have turn signals.

It warms my heart to see euros hoarding cars like Americans.

If you don't have more cars than people in your house, you're not maximizing your potential.

Haha I remember reading through those a while back. I intend to avoid pranging it but I will be doing some majorish body repair.

Yeah after removing the sill i found there wasnt a whole lot of car left behind it... Weve decided to scrap it after the MOT runs out since it wasnt really worth the time to repair.

Ah fair enough. If it was dirt cheap to begin with it can serve it's purpose and then shuffle off this mortal coil with dignity :)

Yeah it did okay for what we paid. Were saving up about £2k to replace it with something better. He might use the bmw in the mean time if he needs more time to save up.
